nayari castillo (Venezuela)

Nayari Castillo was born in 1977. She is a molecular biologist and an artist. She holds a MFA in Contemporary Visual Systems from the Art University in Caracas, Venezuela, as well as a MFA Public Art and PhD in Fine Arts from Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany.

She participated in numerous collective and solo exhibitions in Berlin, Brussels, Buenos Aires, Mexico DF, Miami, New York, Salzburg and Budapest, among others. She won multiple prizes and bursaries, including the First Prize in the 62nd National Contest Arturo Michelena in Venezuela. She is mentioned in publications like Open Maps: Latin-American Photography (1991–2002). In the past five years she attended various residencies including Skowhegan SPS in 2009.

She lives and works in Plymouth (UK) and Berlin. Using video, text and photography as her tools of communication, her installation work relies on site-specific constructs firmly attached to travelling concepts. Her interventions deal with history, time and space, combining classic tools and contemporary devices.
